What is passion fruit?

Passion fruit is a popular tropical fruit that is grown all over the world! It has a colorful, hard rind and a gelatinous, seed-filled center. The unique flavor is both tart and sweet and is one of the most highly scented fruits.

Despite its small size, passion fruit is nutrient-dense and rich in antioxidants, fiber, vitamin C, and vitamin A. It also contains the plant compound polyphenols which have anti-inflammatory effects. Diets high in these nutrients have been linked to a lower risk of heart disease and diabetes.

How to pick one

Like many other fruits, heaviness is important. When the fruit is heavy, that means there is plenty of moisture inside. Also, the skin will be slightly wrinkled when it’s ripe and it should have some give to it when you squeeze it.

How do I eat it?

To eat passion fruit raw, you just need to slice or open the rind to expose the sweet gooey interior. Once cut, the pulp and edible seeds can be scooped out using a spoon. The rind is typically not eaten as it has a highly bitter taste. Passion fruit is also often used in drinks, desserts, or even in salads where its unique flavor can shine!
